Privacy Policy
Plainspoken does not collect, transmit or sell your data. The app has no account, no analytics, no advertising and no third-party code that reports back to anyone.
Effective 12 October 2026
Who is responsible
Plainspoken is developed and published by Szekely Karoly, an individual developer based in Romania ("I", "me"). For anything about privacy, write to support@szekelykaroly.org.
What stays on your device
Everything Plainspoken works with is stored in the app's own storage on your device and is never sent to me:
- Recordings you make or import.
- Transcripts, speaker labels, summaries and translations made from them.
- Settings, your word replacements and your chosen language.
Processing on your device
Transcription, speaker identification, summaries and translations run on your device. Your audio and text are not sent to me or to any server I operate. I operate no servers that receive them.
iCloud
If you are signed in to iCloud, your notes, transcripts and recordings are stored in your private iCloud database so they appear on your other devices. If you let your Mac improve transcripts made on your iPhone or Apple Watch, the recordings travel between your own devices through that same private database. This data is held by Apple under your Apple Account and Apple's privacy policy. I cannot see or access it. Turning off iCloud for Plainspoken in your device settings stops it.
Downloads
The speech models are downloaded the first time you need them from Hugging Face (huggingface.co), which hosts them. Like any download, this shows your IP address to that service. No recording, text or identifier is sent with the request. Where Plainspoken uses Apple's own on-device speech recognition, your device may download the language files for it from Apple.
Purchases
Plainspoken is bought through the App Store. Apple processes the payment; I never receive your name, email address or payment details. Apple gives me sales reports that do not identify you.
Permissions the app asks for
- Microphone: to record.
- Speech Recognition: where the app uses Apple's on-device recogniser.
- System audio recording (Mac): only while you record a meeting, to capture the sound of the call.
- Accessibility (Mac): only for voice typing, to enter the text into the app you are using.
- Notifications (Mac): only if you ask the app to notice calls, to offer a recording.
To notice calls, Plainspoken checks which app is using the microphone. It does not read the call or its participants. Each permission is optional and can be withdrawn in your device's privacy settings. The features that depend on it stop working; the rest of the app continues.
Recording other people
Recordings you make may contain other people's voices. They stay on your devices and in your iCloud like the rest of your notes. You decide what to record and are responsible for having the consent the law requires where you are.
This website and email
This website uses no cookies and no analytics. It is hosted by Cloudflare, which, like any web host, processes your IP address and browser details in short-lived server logs to deliver pages and keep the service secure. If you email me, I keep your message and address only to answer you and delete them when the matter is closed, unless you ask me to delete them sooner.
Children
Plainspoken is a general-purpose app. It is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone.
Your rights
Because I hold no personal data about you from the app, there is nothing for me to export, correct or delete. Your data is on your devices and in your iCloud, under your control. If you have emailed me, you can ask for a copy or deletion of that correspondence at any time. If you are in the EU or UK you also have the right to complain to your data protection authority. In Romania that is the ANSPDCP (dataprotection.ro).
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new effective date. If a future version of the app ever handled data differently, the change would be described here before that version is released.
